Meet the Team

  • Ed Powers

    Head Instructor & Owner

    Ed has been training for 35 years in martial arts. He is currently a 7th degree black belt in Isshin Ryu Karate as well as a 3rd degree black belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu under Master Pedro Sauer and Tony Rinaldi. Ed is also an expert in Police Defensive Tactics as well as Therapeutic Martial Arts for children on the spectrum.

  • Melissa Powers

    Head Instructor & Owner

    Melissa has been training for 33 years in martial arts. She is currently a 7th degree black belt in Isshin Ryu Karate and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. With the assistance of her husband Ed, she developed a Therapeutic Martial Arts program to help autistic and special needs students.

  • "Big" Mike Birt

    Instructor

    Mike has trained in martial arts for 21 years. He is currently a black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (under Ed Powers), a brown belt in Taekwondo, and a green belt in Karate.

  • Skyler Pankratz

    Instructor

    Skyler has been training grappling for 17 years. He has a background in wrestling, combatives, and cross trained in Judo. He has been training at Powers Martial Arts Academy since he was 15 years old. His son also trains BJJ at Powers Martial Arts Academy. Skyler is currently a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

  • Nate Vazquez

    Instructor

    Nate has been training martial arts for 15 years. Nate’s martial arts background includes Kung Fu, Karate, Muay Thai, and MMA. Nate currently is a black sash in Kung Fu and is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

  • Anthony "Tex" Licon

    Instructor

    Tex has been training for 4 years. He was promoted to blue belt in 2022. He has a background in wrestling and has coached children in multiple sports. His wife and children also train BJJ at Powers Martial Arts Academy.

  • Sam Swaffield

    Women’s BJJ Instructor

    Sam has been training at Powers Martial Arts Academy for 4 years and is currently a 2 stripe blue belt. Sam reluctantly started training BJJ because here husband and kids were training. Now she loves BJJ and trains more than they do.

  • Derek Tranchito

    Instructor

    Derek has trained for over 18 years in Muay Thai, boxing and MMA. For the last 13 years he has dedicated his life to providing the highest caliber training for veteran pro fighters and beginners.

  • Charlie Sikora

    Instructor

    Charlie began training in Isshin Ryu Karate, at the age of 51. He joined his wife in training under Masters Ed and Melissa Powers. While training for exercise and learning of the martial arts, Charlie has earned the rank of San Dan (3rd degree black belt).

  • Mikki Quinones-Sikora

    Instructor

    Mikki began studying under Grand Master Jim LaRocco while attending Baldwin Wallace University. After a break of 30 years, she decided to return to training and found Powers Martial Arts. Mikki achieved her dream of Sho Dan (1st degree black belt) in 2019.
